Huolimattomat

Huolimattomat (The Careless) is the Hotakainen-book of 2006. It is fun to read, offers refreshingly accurate observation on Finland, the Finnish national character (or at least our beloved clishes of ourselves), city life in dark November afternoons, and even on studying philosophy. All well and good. Also the main protagonists of the novel do not let the reader down: they are as witty, outspoken, prone to loneness, and still ordinary as cheap teabags as one would expect from Mr. Hotakainen.

The story itself disappoints the reader, at least on the surface. It is a simple crime thriller, but without the thrill. It is also a love story, but not a romantic one. There is a plot, the good prevails, the bad gets its due, and all is well.

I have always liked the witty way characters speak in Mr. Hotakainen's novels. It used to be surprising and novel, but not anymore. Now it is quite predictable, which might be forgiveable. But having all characters speak with same voice, with the same sense of humour and cynicism does wear the reader down.

In all, Huolimattomat is worth the few hours it takes to read. But do not expect it to change your life, or even the way you see the life of others, the careless.
